Sergey Larenkov

Link to the Past

Sergey Larenkov works by using images taken during World War II then retakes these photographs in modern times in the exact place, and then merges them together to create one image. The image shows how the landscape has changed since the 1940’s in these places, such as Berlin, Paris, Vienna, St. Petersburg, Odessa and Prague. The use of editing in this way creates an eerie but interesting effect, showing the past today. He is able to bring the past forward and show how things were before and during the war.

Sergey said: 'I am always searching for the places pictured in the old postcards and photos any chance I get. The hardest part of my photography is locating the exact point and angle from which the original picture had been taken.’

This body of work is my favorite re-photography work I have found. With my interest in history, it really showed the impact war has on many countries and the people in them. He is very successful in finding the exact points, and blending the images so well. I think his images will be great for many years to come, to show the past, and the current area today.
