Reconstructing the View
Mark Klett and Byron Wolfe used landscape
photography to reflect on the passage of time, and the construction of
perception. They spent five years exploring the Grand Canyon for the ‘Reconstruction
the View’ project. The team’s landscape photographs are based on the idea of re-photography.
They were able to identify sites of historic photographs and make new
photographs of those precise locations blended together. Klett and Wolfe used
many different images of the canyon, ranging from historical photographs and
drawings, souvenir postcards and contemporary digital images drawn from Flickr.
They then merged the two images together using digital postproduction methods. I really like this set of images, even with the landscapes not visibly different, it still shows a length of time has passed. The beauty of the scene can still be seen in the images, and shows the area features.
