Lee Friedlander - America By Car

Lee Friedlander is an American photographer and artist. In the 1960s and 70s he worked mostly with 35mm cameras and black and white film for his work. He uses internal framing within the one image, even though you look at it as a whole image, the photograph is spilt up into three sections using a triptych, this gives the photograph an illusion as it is showing 3 different directions. The image drags in and out of the frame which challenges the perspective of time, as in the reflection of the mirror the pavement changes its angle and is on a slant, from the pavement on the right hand side of the mirror, the image is moving from left to right which shows the car is travelling forward. This photograph was taken to question the audience understanding of the image, and constantly change there view of it when they look at a different part of the image. Friedlander uses steering wheels, dashboards, motels, churches, monuments, suspension bridges, typical American landscapes, and often Friedlander’s uses his own images.
